about
For 2020, Psychic Shakes will be releasing his second EP, and longest release to date ‘Unsaid.’ The EP is conversational; McLellan is speaking to himself or to others throughout. ‘Unsaid’ is a cathartic monologue, an attempt to unlock the internal conversations people have with themselves. It’s a 5 track EP, with most songs acting as a conversation between McLellan or someone else. He speaks to his girlfriend, himself, and people he’ll never speak to again. Ultimately it’s a release, but it’s not mournful one- it’s transgressive in a positive way.
On 'Wage Slave' McLellan laments the monotony and boredom of doing a low paid hospitality job in your early twenties. It’s a light-hearted, humorous song about unemployment, and the reluctance to be part of the grind. It’s also a nod to some of the surf-driven pop of Psychic Shakes' earlier releases.
lyrics
Girl I didn't make it in today
I woke and had to call my work to say
I'm ill, I need another stoney day alone
God another fifty years of this
Will I be rich enough to reminisce upon
The days we couldn't pay our way in life
I'm just a wage slave
Short on my rent again
Stuck in my early twenties
Hey but I can't complain
I'm just a wage slave
Calling in sick again
I'm just a wage slave
Call me a wage slave
Work is tied up to the main inside I guess
But baby know I really tried to find
The kind of job to make you proud tonight
Drunk and scrolling through indeed today
There's only kitchen work and shitty pay
I don't just wanna end up poor when I turn grey
I'm just a wage slave
Short on my rent again
Stuck in my early twenties
Hey but I can't complain
I'm just a wage slave
Calling in sick again
I'm just a wage slave
Call me a wage slave

Effervescent pop without a drop of irony, perfectly geared for fans of the more dance-oriented side of indie music and Tears for Fears. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 2, 2023
